We must always remember our Lord Jesus’ example as he hung, nailed to the cross, after having been humiliated, spat on, crowned with thorns and brutally scourged. What did Jesus do to those wicked men who had treated Him so cruelly? Jesus prayed for them! Jesus said in Luke 23: 34, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.”
How could Jesus forgive his tormentors and those murderers? They wanted Jesus dead when he was innocent and sinless. I believe the answer is love. Jesus loved sinners, including His enemies. In fact, He wants us to love them too.
In John 13: 34 – 35, Jesus said:
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
Knowing how short the human memory could be, Jesus in John 15: 12 repeated this injunction:
“This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.”
May our Lord help all of us to follow His example and commandment. May all of us be forgiven and forgiving, with His help.
