Wisdom Proverbs 8:1-21

Where (Location of Wisdom, v 1-3)
Wisdom takes her place openly and publicly in high places and she cries out to sinners to repent. It is a cry that is with understanding. God knows and understands the trials and temptations that we face, and we must flee from such temptations.

Who (Audience of Wisdom, v 4-6)
•    All men (as opposed to women): Solomon calls out to men to be leaders and stronger vessels to lead and guide their families and the nation.
•    The simple and foolish: The simple and foolish can understand wisdom because God will grant the understanding. The wisdom from above is described as excellent and sound, and we need to receive this wisdom through the Holy Scriptures. God’s Word can help us obtain this wisdom from above.

What (Characteristics of Wisdom, v 7-9)
•    This wisdom is sound. Although we are constantly surrounded by lies and deception, this sound wisdom from God’s Word can help us.
•    This wisdom is straight. God’s Word is absolutely dependable.
•    This wisdom is simple to understand. The Spirit of God makes wisdom simple and easy to understand. Spiritual things have to be spiritually discerned.

Why (Reason to have Wisdom, v10-21)
•    It is far better than physical treasures.
•    Prudence (i.e. good sense) will come hand-in-hand with wisdom as we exercise wisdom daily.
•    God’s wisdom has the ability to seek out everything. Nothing can be hid from it.
•    God’s wisdom deals with the root of our sins. Wisdom hates evil, speaks against envy, strife and pride.
•    It provides clear direction. There is no compromise or ambiguity.
•    If you love and seek after wisdom, wisdom will find you.
