Open Rebuke is Better Than Secret Love

Proverbs 27:5: There is a place for rebuke, though it may be hurtful. Ecclesiastes7:5 tells us that a fool rejects rebuke, but a wise man takes heed of it. A rebuke is justified when it is used to address sin. Hence, we need to rebuke correctly, not for unmet expectations, etc. Address sin by rebuking at the right time, right place, to the right person, with the right attitude.

We sin because we are born sinners. We cannot do good (Isa 64:6). Only God, who has the power, can change us individually from evil to righteous. Before we are born-again, we can’t say “no” to sin, but after our conversion, we can. It is a daily struggle whether to obey or disobey God. The commandments of God have been given to us. Will we choose to obey Him?

When we succumb to fleshly lust, God will rebuke us. Rebuke is a means of grace which God uses to correct His children. It is not a good thing when no one bothers to rebuke us for we will then not know our sin and may become a stumbling block to ourselves and others. In Proverbs 27:5, Solomon compared “open rebuke” with “secret love.” Open rebuke, though it can hurt and affect fellowship, is actually love in action. However, not every sin is to be rebuked openly. The sin committed by a church leader may have to be dealt with publicly. The same sin committed by a church member may not. Open rebuke will help the person to repent. If a parent refrains from disciplining his child, the child may grow up unrestrained and lost. The parent would have failed.

Proverbs 27:6:  One who covers up our sins is not a good friend, but an enemy. Those who tell us our mistakes are faithful friends. Are we ourselves a faithful friend to others?

Proverbs 27:17: A good friend will “sharpen” you and make you useful. Rebuke is necessary to bring those who err to come back to God’s way.

Our Saviour is such a Friend who rebukes us. When we read His Word, we are reminded to keep our lives pure (Heb 4:12). He knows us and will give us grace to go through each day (1 Cor 10:13). Are we willing to trust Him? Have you believed in Him? He is all that we need. May God help u
