“Thy word is a lamp (niyr) unto my feet, and a light (owr) unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).
A Lamp (niyr): lamp, light. This word referred to the lamps of the Tabernacle (Exodus 27:20); the lamp in the Temple with Samuel (1 Samuel 3:3); the Word of God that lights the way (Ps 119:105); and the noble wife that does not let her lamp go out at night (Proverbs 31:18) (AMG).
A Light (owr): light from heavenly bodies (Jeremiah 31:35; Ezekiel 32:7) but also for light itself (Genesis 1:3; Ecclesiastes 12:2). The pillar of fire was a light for the wandering Israelites (Exodus 13:21). One day God, who is clothed with light (a manifestation of His splendour), will replace the light of the heavens with His own light (Ps 104:2; Isa 60:19-20; cf. Rev 21:23; Rev 22:5) (AMG).
A lamp gives sufficient light for our steps, and just step by step, and a light gives sufficient light for our path or way. God’s Word gives us sufficient light not only for our steps but also for our path. We do need God’s Living Word and written Word for each step we take and for the narrow way we walk in. Truly, “For the commandment is a lamp (niyr); and the law is light (owr); and reproofs of instruction are the way of life” (Proverbs 6:23); and “The entrance (unfolding, opening) of thy words giveth light (owr); It giveth understanding unto the simple” (Psalm 119:30); and “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19).
